Are You Operating Your Heater Differently?
Is anything that you’re doing this winter different from last winter? Things that are “different” could be running your heater more often, running your heater for longer periods of time, or running your heater at higher thermostat temperatures.
Now, there’s a decent chance that you’re running your heater
more often than you were last winter. Last winter we were still moving out and about
in the world unabashed with no masks. This year is quite different. You’re probably
working from home and having happy hours over virtual calls. Think about how
much more time you spend heating your home because of this. If you give it some
mental calculation and realize that you’re really putting a lot of extra mileage
of your heater, then this could be the cause of your price spike.
What’s Your Insulation Like?
How well insulated is your home? This is a question that you need to ask yourself at least once in the lifespan of your home. Not doing so could have you living in a glorified tent and struggling to get warm all winter. It can also have you paying entirely too much for your heating.
If your home isn’t properly insulated, you’re not going to be able to heat it up or keep it warm for long. If you’re looking to lower your heating bills, insulation is a great place to start. You can start small with weatherstripping or by beefing up your windows and doors. If that doesn’t do enough, we’d suggest moving to the attic for reinforcement.
